Happy Birthday, Grant Wood!

Kicking off our Pajama Storytimes for this spring, we celebrated Grant Wood’s birthday with an artist party. Decorations were the easy part: we grabbed the paintbrushes from the classroom, scribble-painted roll paper for make-shift tablecloths, put up some Grant Wood posters on easels around the room… We had leftover mini puzzles from Family Fun Day (which our very patient volunteer Nancy M put together when I got frustrated and gave up); they look like puddles of paint when they’re assembled, so they became the cutest placemats.

Cupcakes generously donated by That One Cupcake Place: www.facebook.com/thatonecupcakeplace. Thanks, Teresa!

What better serving tray than a palette? I got this huge clear plastic one and painted the back of it with acrylics, so now it looks like it has paint blobs on it.

We read a couple of really funny books in the galleries toether. Then the kiddoes make teeny tiny works of art to prop up on the teeny tiny easels they made. Helping them out with that was Mr Shucks, brought to us by the Cedar Rapids Kernels! He made lots of new friends.

Did I forget to mention… We got our “creative juices” flowing, in the form of drink pouches to wash down the cupcakes.

And if you’re interested in coming to any of the upcoming Pajama Storytimes, visit www.crma.org to see the themes we’ll be exploring in the next few months. We have them every other Thursday evening, 7-8pm, and they’re totally free! Join us!

All the good ideas I ever had came to me while I was milking a cow.   —Grant Wood
